The resolution was moved by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, requesting the central government to take necessary steps for the release of several prisoners of war (PoW) and other Indians languishing in jails of Pakistan due to legal impediments.

Expressing happiness over the release of Surjeet Singh, the Ferozepur native who returned to India after 30 years in a Pakistani jail, Badal congratulated him and his family. He also announced that the government would extend appropriate help for rehabilitation of Surjeet Singh within the legal framework, as per the wishes of his family.

Badal opined that Surjeet’s release would create an atmosphere of harmony between India and Pakistan, and the relations would get a further fillip if Sarabjit would be released too.

In Delhi, Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur thanked the Punjab government.
