The move is aimed at curbing the “spiralling” prices of sand and gravel in the state and eliminating the role of private contractors.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the council of ministers led by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.
The government also gave the nod to amend the Punjab Minor Mineral Rules, 2013, allowing the industries department to allot 37 quarries to the PSIEC at a fixed rate of royalty.
The state government’s decision came after a committee headed by senior BJP leader Balramji Das Tandon had pointed out that skyrocketing prices of sand and gravel was one of the main reasons that led to the Akali-BJP coalition’s below-par performance in Punjab in the 2014 parliamentary elections.
