Punjab and Haryana high court has refused to grant permission for videography during scrutiny of nominations on May 30 for elections to four municipal corporations in Punjab.
On a petition filed by the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) and its members, seeking directions in this regard, the court however clarified that videography can be done by interested persons outside polling booths on the polling day throughout Punjab at their own cost.
The directions came from a division bench comprising acting chief justice MM Kumar and justice Alok Singh.
The municipal corporations of Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala are scheduled to go to the polls on June 10.
The petition was filed by Sharwan Grover of Jalandhar, Parbinder Kaur Bhalla of Amritsar, Harish Kumar of Patiala and Anil Kumar of Ludhiana.
During resumed hearing of the case, the bench was informed through an affidavit filed by ML Sharma, secretary, state election commission, that independent observers had been appointed for the MC elections in the state.
The court was also informed that IAS officers had been appointed observers, namely Harbhupinder Singh for ward numbers 1-33, Amritsar; HS Pabla, ward numbers 34-65, Amritsar; Inderjit Singh Sandhu, ward numbers 1-30, Jalandhar; Arvinder Singh, ward numbers 31-60, Jalandhar; Kirpa Shankar Saroj, ward numbers 1-50, Patiala; VK Janjua, ward numbers 1-38, Ludhiana; and Ramesh Kumar Ganta, ward numbers 35-75, Ludhiana.
