Milkfed, Punjab's cooperative milk producers' federation which produces Verka brand, has increased milk prices by Rs 2 per kg with effect from July 1.

Defending the decision, a senior Milkfed official said: "Exports have opened up and many private companies are offering high prices to farmers. To maintain our supply chain, we also have to pay more to farmers, and also on a par with these companies."
In 2013, Milkfed had increased milk prices thrice. Prices were raised by Rs 1 per litre each in June and September last year and hiked by Rs 2 per litre in December.
This year, the rates were earlier hiked on March 2. Officials had then also defended the move, citing low supply and rise in input costs.
