Police opened fire at a gang of diesel thieves on Sunday near KEB Circle in Jigni industrial area of the city. Police said, the miscreants had been stealing diesel from parked vehicles for days and when the team police closed in on them, they tried to attack the cops.
Police said the gang kingpin identified as Srinivasa Raju (50), who hails from Peenya, was shot at and arrested. Another accused Mallana Gowda was also pinned down, however, his two associates managed to escape, said a police official. “He along with his associates have been stealing diesel from trucks parked at Jigani Industrial Area,” said a senior police officer, on anonymity.
A police statement read that after receiving information that four persons were stealing fuel from vehicles at KEB junction, a team was dispatched to the area. Seeing the police had surrounded them, the gang attacked the cops using machetes, read the statement.
“Seeing this, inspector Sudarshan opened fire and injured Raju. While the others fled, the police were able to apprehend Gowda.The police are on the lookout for the other gang members who are on the run,” said the statement.
58-yr-old man burnt alive
A 58-year-old man was burnt alive, while four houses and the shop in which he had stored petrol illegally caught fire Seehalli village in Mysuru on Sunday, said police.
The deceased Somashekar, used to run a shop, selling household items and groceries, adjacent to the house which caught fire. During the investigation, police learnt that Somashekar had stored petrol in his house and was selling it illegally from his shop. It was also alleged that he was selling adulterated petrol since he was selling it at a cheaper cost. On Sunday around 6 pm, when Somashekar was at his shop, his house caught fire. It soon spread to the shop and ignited the petrol stored inside. His family was not present at the house during the incident, said police. “In a bid to douse the flames, he entered the house during which the LPG cylinder exploded. As flames engulfed the house suddenly, Somashekar was caught in the fire and burnt alive,” said a senior Mysuru police official.
