3 killed as car rams into parked truck on highway in Jalandhar

Three youths were killed after their car rammed into a stationary truck near Maqsudan bypass on the Jalandhar-Amritsar national highway on Saturday morning, police said.

They said the truck driver fled the spot after the accident. The incident happened around 6.30am when a Maruti Swift car rammed into a loaded stationary truck. The impact was so severe that the car was completely mangled, leaving two of the victims’ bodies severely disfigured and trapped inside the wreckage. Another youth was ejected from the vehicle by the impact. Police said all the occupants of the car died on the spot.

Rakesh Kumar, SHO, Division Number 1 police station, said they received information about the accident at 6.30am. “Eyewitnesses told the police that a Swift car, carrying three occupants, rammed into a truck from the rear. The car was speeding and failed to locate the truck parked on the roadside. The speedometer of the car mentioned the speed of 140km\hr at the time of the incident,” he said.

He added that the deceased have been identified as Vijay Verma (26) and Ramu (25), both from Gulmarg Colony, while the third victim is yet to be identified.

Police said they were going towards Amritsar when the mishap occurred. The driver of the truck, who was reportedly sleeping at the time of incident, managed to flee from the spot. Further investigation is underway.
