The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) newly elected MLA from Amritsar South and radiologist Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar was appointed officiating president of the Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD) to run the affairs of the 117-year-old Sikh organisation after the demise of its president Nirmal Singh.

Nijjar was the vice-president of the CKD earlier. He has also been a senior leader of the AAP since the beginning and he defeated Congress’ Inderbir Singh Bolaria in the Punjab assembly elections.
After being elected unanimously by the office-bearers and executive committee, he took charge of the headship of the organisation, which is running more than 50 educational institutions, besides old age homes, orphanages, etc.
He said, “Efforts will be made to uplift the standard of the schools running in rural areas and spread Sikhism. Besides, training will be given to teachers of these schools to develop their personality.”
