While 36 people were found positive in the district in the week ending on June 19, the number saw an over two-fold spike to 80 this week, highest since February end, according to figures provided by the civil surgeon’s office. This included six new cases on Sunday that pushed the active caseload to 80.

The week also witnessed a single-day spike of 26 cases on June 23, highest in nearly four months, and health minister Anil Vij also tested positive in Ambala a day before.

Notably, at the beginning of June, the district had logged just seven cases until June 5, before the infections jumped to 21 in the subsequent week

According to district epidemiologist Dr Sunil Hari similar trend was being noticed across the state and most of the cases involved inter-state travellers.

He said despite the rise in infections, hospitalisation rate was still low, as all 80 positive patients in the district were recuperating at home with mild symptoms that were abating in less than five days.

On the measures to check the sudden rise, Dr Hari said, “Sampling has been increased and infrastructure is already in place. But people also need to adhere to Covid precautions to keep the fourth wave of the pandemic at bay.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 40,958 people have contracted the virus in Ambala and 542 have died.

Meanwhile, amid the surge in cases, the district is also seeing an increase in the vaccination numbers. While 4,595 beneficiaries were vaccinated last week, with any of the three doses, the number rose to 5,746 this week.

Health officials believe that the vaccination figures will go up further as summer vacations in schools conclude.
