Police are said to have arrested the driver of the Toyota Innova, suspected to be ferrying Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh and his aide, which had been abandoned at Mernaian Kalan village after a police chase earlier in the week.
Search operations have been further intensified following reports of the arrest of driver Joga Singh from Ludhiana district. The arrested driver told the police that Amritpal handed him his own mobile phone in a bid to throw off the teams chasing them, sources privy to the developments said.
The radical preached, his aide, who has been identified as Papalpreet Singh, and the driver had earlier on Tuesday night managed to escape after being chased by police teams tailing them from Phagwara.
The trio is said to have disappeared into the fields after jumping over the wall of a place of worship.
Since then, police teams and paramilitary personnel have been scouting for the absconders. On Thursday, search parties also used a drone in a bid to ascertain the possible escape routes.
