Bihar native caught smuggling 236 boxes of liquor in Chandigarh
The accused, identified as Munna Kumar Chaudhary, a native of Bihar, was caught by the district crime cell from Mandela light point in Phase 1, Industrial Area, Chandigarh. Police said the truck, bearing a Haryana registration number, was stopped at a check post around 4.45 am.
In the third major liquor seizure this month, the Chandigarh Police arrested a truck driver who was smuggling 236 boxes of liquor meant for sale in Chandigarh to Bihar in the wee hours of Monday.
The accused, identified as Munna Kumar Chaudhary, a native of Bihar, was caught by the district crime cell from Mandela light point in Phase 1, Industrial Area.
Police said the truck, bearing a Haryana registration number, was stopped at a check post around 4.45 am. On checking the vehicle, cops found 236 boxes, containing 22,656 bottles of Royal Green whisky (90 ml).
Police said to dodge police, the truck driver had stacked the liquor boxes between boxes of medicines and soap.
During preliminary interrogation, the accused disclosed that he had been smuggling liquor from Chandigarh to Bihar in connivance with a liquor dealer from Chandigarh.
A case under the Excise Act was registered against the driver at the Industrial Area police station .
Earlier, on January 21, a truck driver was caught in Sector 31 while smuggling 500 boxes of liquor meant for sale in Chandigarh to Haryana. Similarly, on January 6, a truck driver was arrested from Phase 2, Industrial Area, for smuggling 405 boxes of illicit liquor under sacks of rice straws.
