Chandigarh Police head constable shot dead at home; 18-year-old son questioned

Victim was killed in his sleep with a country-made pistol; suspect was previously out on bail in a hit-and-run case.

A head constable posted in the accounts branch of the UT Police headquarters was shot dead at his residence in Sector 22 on Friday morning.

The victim, Nitin Kumar, was shot at close range in the head while sleeping. He was pronounced dead at the spot, and his body was shifted to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, for post-mortem examination.

Police received a call from neighbours around 8.50am.

Investigators recovered a country-made pistol from the roof of the house, believed to be the weapon used in the crime.

The police are questioning the victim’s 18-year-old son, Armaan, whom official sources suspect executed the shooting. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the killing.

Armaan was previously booked in February this year after running over two madrasa teachers from Saharanpur with a Mahindra Thar near the Kalagram light point. He was arrested in that case and subsequently released on bail.

A Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) team inspected the crime scene, and the area remains cordoned off as police investigations continue.
