Police said the first case was a hit-and-run, where a car sped off after hitting a 40-year-old man and his seven-year-old son on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway near Khizargarh village on Saturday night.

The father was identified as Desraj, who worked as a labourer in Mohali, and his son as Avesh.

Desraj’s wife Tejwanti told the police that they lived in a rented accommodation. On Saturday night, they had gone to a temple at Khizargarh village. While heading back home, they were crossing the highway, when her husband and son were hit by a speeding car.

Passers-by helped her rush them to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh. But the doctors declared them dead.

Zirakpur station house officer (SHO) inspector Deepinder Singh said, “We have booked the absconding car driver under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination.”

“As per preliminary investigation, it was a Honda City car belonging to a Pathankot resident. Further probe is on to trace and arrest the driver,” the SHO added.

In another accident, a 68-year-old man lost his life after his car collided with an SUV moving on the wrong side at Chaomajra village on Airport Road on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mohan Singh, a resident of Ambala.

Investigating officer Raj Kumar said, “Mohan was going towards Kandala village in his Maruti Suzuki Swift. Around 10.30 am, he took the slip road near Chaomajra village, where a Mahindra XUV coming from the wrong side hit his car.”

Kumar said the impact of the collision left both cars mangled. The XUV driver fled the spot on foot, leaving his car behind.

Mohan sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Sohana hospital, where he succumbed.

“A case has been registered against the unidentified driver under relevant sections of the IPC and efforts are being made to nab him,” police said.
