Raw products worth lakhs of rupees perished after fire engulfed a grocery store in Samrala.
The incident happened at around 7 pm on Wednesday on the second floor of the Ravinder Karyana Store where the godown was situated and had cooking oil and other items stored in it.
The fire officials said that according to the initial investigation, the fire erupted due to a short circuit. It took around five to six tenders to douse the flames.
The emergency operation of the fire brigade was hampered due to leakage in the water pipes. The leakage made it hard for the fire officials to get the flames under control.
Fire department official Ravinder Singh said that as the fire was inside the store, pipes with low capacity were being used with high pressure of water due to which the issue arose.
He said that the fire department water pipes were damaged due to the pressure of water. He further added that estimates to replace the pipes have been sent to the authorities.
Narinder Khullar, owner of the shop said that he was not present at the shop when the incident happened.
He said that in the godown, grocery items including cooking oil and purified milk were stored.
Deputy superintendent of police, Samrala, Waryam Singh said that no loss of life or human injury was reported in the fire. He said that he discussed the issue of damaged pipes with sub-divisional officers which need to be replaced on priority.
