Police said the victim, Harpinder Singh, was an office-bearer of Shiromani Akali Dal’s transport wing.

Hoshiarpur Sadar station house officer (SHO) Baljinder Singh said they had arrested two accused, Bhupinder Singh and Davinder Singh of the same village, for the crime.

His wife, Sarabjit Kaur, told police that they had a land dispute with Bhupinder and others, which the court had settled in favour of her family.

She alleged that the accused did not accept the verdict and after the revenue department gave the possession of the land to her family, he started threatening her husband.

On Thursday, Harpinder was returning home on his motorcycle, when a group of eight to nine men intercepted him a few metres from his house and launched an attack with sharp-edged weapons.

He was rushed to a private hospital where he died late in the night.

Sadar police launched an investigation after registering a murder case, and arrested two accused on Friday. SHO Baljinder Singh said hunt was on to nab the remaining accused.
