Ludhiana: 2 dead in boiler blast at Doraha steel factory

Sub-inspector Gurmeet Singh, the station house officer of Doraha police station, said the two labourers, Vinay Singh and Rahul Kumar, died on the spot at The Great India Steel Factory on Rampur road. Four others who were injured were identified as Ramesh Kumar, Ashish, Anil Kumar and Babu Ram Mishra.
Security guard of the factory, who was present near the main gate, raised alarm and alerted the police and fire brigade. The guard said the roof of the factory collapsed due to the explosion and labourers were trapped inside. He informed the owner of the factory, who lives in Ludhiana, and also alerted locals for help.
Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harish Kumar Dayama said the police are trying to ascertain the reason behind the blast.
One of the injured, Sagar Kumar, said six labourers were working near the boiler when it exploded. “Smoke engulfed the factory and I became unconscious. When I regained consciousness, I found myself in hospital,” he said.
Payal deputy superintendent of police Harsimrat Singh said a blast took place in the boiler of the gasification unit of the steel factory, when six workers were inside. Two of them died on the spot. They were working near the boiler at the time of the incident. Vinay was putting wood logs into the boiler, Rahul was on maintenance work.
He added that all four injured were rushed to Sidhu Hospital, Doraha. Two of the injured were later referred to SPS hospital in Ludhiana.
The DSP said the factory owner has booked under IPC sections 304-A (causing death due to negilgence), 337, 338 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) at the Doraha police station. We have informed the families of the deceased, he added.
