Federation head Satish Kumar Arora made the announcement, saying the database, accessible through a website, will comprise information of approximately 30,000 autos operating in the city — including 20,000 diesel and CNG autos and 10,000 electric rickshaws.

Satish Arora alleged that the administration has failed to take effective measures to bring down theft incidents in auto rickshaws in the city.

The distribution of token numbers will enable easy identification of auto drivers, making it possible to determine the responsible party in case of any incidents. The establishment of helpline numbers will also allow passengers to retrieve forgotten items or raise complaints in case of any problems. In addition, ID cards will be issued to auto drivers.

Satish Kumar Arora said that attempts to implement a unique ID number system for auto drivers have been initiated multiple times, but each time it has been discontinued without success.

“The lack of proper stands or parking areas has made it difficult for auto drivers to station auto rickshaws. Despite a promise during elections to provide space under a flyover and implement a yellow line policy, these promises have not been fulfilled,” he added.

Pawan Kumar, an auto driver, meanwhile, said, “I voted for the AAP government as they had promised to support auto drivers similar to their efforts in Delhi. However, they have failed to fulfil this promise.”

“Politicians only pay attention to auto drivers during election time and then ignore them for the next four and a half years. After five years pass, they make enticing promises only to disappear,” Surinderjit, another auto driver said.
