Ludhiana: Cross-examination of Majithia concludes in defamation case

The cross-examination of senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister Bikram Majithia concluded in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate Dazy Bangarh on Monday in a defamation case filed against Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh.

Majithia had filed the complaint on January 12, 2016, under Sections 499 and 500 of the IPC, alleging that Singh had defamed him by calling him a “drug dealer” and that he would be jailed if the AAP came to power.

Advocate Akash Bajaj, counsel for Sanjay Singh and in-charge of AAP’s legal wing in Ludhiana district, said the cross-examination was conducted on the final opportunity granted by the Punjab and Haryana high court. “With this, the evidence stands closed and the matter is listed for final arguments on May 19,” he said.

Bajaj added that Sanjay Singh was exempted from personal appearance owing to legislative commitments in Delhi.

Majithia’s counsel, advocate Damanbir Singh Sobti, however, said the next hearing was fixed for further proceedings and not specifically for final arguments. “The final opportunity granted by the high court for cross-examination has been availed. The matter will now proceed further on May 19,” he said.
