Ludhiana: Man duped of ₹1.5 lakh in ATM fraud

Division Number 3 police have booked an unidentified person for allegedly duping a 59-year-old man of ₹1.5 lakh by swapping his debit card at an ATM kiosk.

The complainant, Charanjit Singh, a resident of Mohalla Ambedkar Nagar, said he had visited a Bank of Baroda ATM at Dharampura near Baba Than Singh Chowk on March 29 to withdraw cash from his wife’s account.

He said he faced difficulty operating the ATM when a man present at the kiosk offered help. The accused allegedly guided him through the transaction and swapped his debit card with a fake one.

Singh later realised the fraud after receiving transaction alerts on his phone showing that ₹1.5 lakh had been withdrawn from the account at another ATM.

Investigating officer ASI Paramjit Singh said a case has been registered under Sections 318(4) and 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He added that CCTV footage from the ATM is being examined to identify and trace the accused
