As per an official communication issued by the department, a survey has been ordered to identify such violations in hotels constructed between January 1, 2021, and the present date. The move follows complaints that several hotel owners have encroached upon parking areas and put them to commercial use, in violation of building bye-laws and approved plans.

The letter, issued by the assistant town planner, refers to a complaint filed earlier this year highlighting large-scale violations. It also mentions multiple representations pointing to illegal constructions and deviations from approved designs.

Officials said the matter had been under consideration for some time and directions were issued earlier to form a committee to examine the violations and submit a factual report. However, it has now emerged that no concrete action was taken, prompting fresh directions for a detailed survey.

The communication further notes that despite clear instructions and complaints, enforcement on the ground has remained weak. Concerns have been raised that violations continued unchecked, with little monitoring or penalties imposed on offenders. The department has now sought a comprehensive report identifying all such properties where parking norms have been violated.

The report is expected to include details of construction approvals, deviations and current usage of the buildings. The issue assumes significance as misuse of parking spaces not only violates building norms but also contributes to traffic congestion and civic inconvenience in busy areas of the city.
