Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Kang said a dope test and a medical fitness certificate should be made legally mandatory for grooms prior to marriage. He urged the Government of India and all state governments to take immediate and stringent steps in this direction. “This small reform can prove to be a major protective shield for the women of our country,” he added.

Expressing concern over the rising number of divorce cases and domestic violence in present-day society, the Anandpur Sahib MP urged the central government to introduce strict reforms in marriage-related laws. He said the trend of marriages breaking down and families being destroyed was continuously increasing in the country, adding that the problem was not limited to Punjab, but was affecting families across the entire country.

He said that while girls are subjected to scrutiny ahead of marriages before marriage, boys are not asked anything. “Issues such as substance abuse, serious illnesses, and criminal tendencies that come to light in men after marriage are ruining countless lives,” he said.
