The Mohali unit of State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) on Wednesday arrested two men for attempting to extort ₹30 lakh from the owner of a Mohali-based pharmaceutical company by posing as Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar.
The accused have been identified as Suraj, 20, a resident of Maloya Colony in Chandigarh, who works as an AC mechanic; and Mandeep Singh, 32, of Mangewal village in Shri Anandpur Sahib, who is a taxi driver. Two mobile phones and a motorcycle without registration number plate have been recovered from their possession.
Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the duo was arrested from Verka Chowk in Mohali.
The complainant, Amit, a resident of Phase 3B2, Mohali, owns Organic Lab Private Limited, a pharmaceutical company based in Shahi Majra. He told police that he had received a phone call from a man claiming to be Goldy Brar on December 30, who threatened to kill him if he didn’t pay ₹30 lakh extortion money.
Yadav said that Suraj had used Mandeep’s WhatsApp number to make the call to Amit.
AIG of SSOC Mohali, Ashwani Kapur, said, “We have sent mobile phones of both accused for forensic examination to find out if they made extortion calls to anyone else.”
The accused have been booked under Sections 384 (extortion) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at SSOC police station in Mohali.
The DGP cautioned people to be wary of fake extortion calls and urged them to immediately inform police if they receive such a call. In a recent investigation, the majority of extortion calls in the name of gangsters were found to be fake.
