Official’s suicide: Punjab ex-minister Bhullar sent to 14-day judicial custody

AMRITSAR: A district court in Amritsar on Wednesday sent Patti MLA and former minister Laljit Singh Bhullar to 14-day judicial custody in connection with the suicide of Punjab State Warehousing Corporation (PSWC) district manager Gagandeep Singh Randhawa.
Bhullar was presented in the court after his police remand ended. The police sought more remand citing that the investigation is pending. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court sent him to 14-day judicial custody.
The former minister, who was arrested from Mandi Gobindgarh on March 23, was presented in the court under heavy security.
Randhawa, 45, reportedly consumed poison at his Ranjit Avenue residence in Amritsar in the early hours of March 21. Before the toxin took effect, Randhawa recorded a 12-second video on his mobile phone, naming Bhullar.
After the incident, Bhullar stepped down from his post on March 21. On March 22, a first information report (FIR) was registered against Bhullar, his father, Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, and PA Dilbag Singh under Sections 109 (abetment of suicide), 351(3) (criminal intimidation by treating to cause death or grievous hurt) and 3(5) (offence by multiple individuals) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
However, Sukhdev Singh Bhullar and Dilbag Singh have not been arrested yet.
Meanwhile, a 24-year-old youth, Gurbax Singh, of Faizpur locality in Amritsar, who was among two persons arrested for snapping electricity supply to the house of victim’s family, died in the police custody. Family members of the deceased accused the cops of torturing him to death. There was no immediate response from the police.
