Punjab assembly: Oppn Congress guns for AAP govt on law and order
Opposition Congress MLAs walk out of the House, raising slogans against Speaker and CM Bhagwant Mann when their adjournment motion on law and order was disallowed
The budget session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha resumed on a stormy note on Wednesday with members of the opposition Congress walking out after raising slogans in the well of the House when their adjournment motion on law and order was disallowed.
As soon as Question Hour began, leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa rose to his feet and took up the adjournment motion. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan asked Bajwa to take his seat, telling him that he will get time during Zero Hour.
When Bajwa kept insisting, he was told by the Speaker that the adjournment motion has been disallowed.
At this, Congress MLAs entered the well of the House, raising slogans against the Speaker and chief minister Bhagwant Mann.
Sandhwan appealed to the Congress MLAs to let the House function as Question Hour is sacrosanct.
The Congress members continued their protest and did not ask the questions when their turn came. Later, they walked out to register their protest.
The assembly session resumed a day after the Punjab and Haryana high court criticised the Punjab government for failing to arrest radical Sikh leader Amritpal Singh, asking how the Waris Punjab De chief managed to escape despite the administration having 80,000 police personnel at its disposal.
Amritpal, 30, who police link to the larger secessionist movement, remains on the run, five days after the administration launched a statewide hunt to arrest him.
The National Security Act has been invoked against him.
