Student, elderly woman killed in 2 Mohali mishaps

Two people, including a student and an elderly woman, lost their lives in separate tragic accidents in Mohali on Tuesday.

In the first case, a 20-year-old student of a private university in Rajpura died after his bike was hit by a speeding truck near Chhat light point in Zirakpur around 1.30 am.

The victim was identified as Arman Singh from Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, currently living in Zirakpur in a rented accommodation. He was rushed to Dera Bassi civil hospital but was referred to GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Victim’s father Mohinder Singh,51, in his complaint, told the police that his son had gone to have dinner at a dhaba on his bike.

Upon reaching the said light point, he met with an accident. Victim’s friend Shivam informed Mohinder Singh over the phone around 3 am.

The accused truck driver, identified as Gurmeet Singh was arrested by police but was later released on bail.

He is facing charges under Sections 281 (rash driving), 106(1) (causing death by negligence) and 324 (4) (mischief causing damage between 20,000 and 1 lakh) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

In the second case, a 65-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a speeding vehicle in Phase 2.

The deceased was identified as Chandarkali, a native of Uttar Pradesh, who was residing in a rented accommodation in the same area.

She was crossing the road when the mishap took place. Her son Rajesh, in his complaint, told police that his mother went for a walk in the nearby park. When she was returning home around 11 pm, she was hit by a speeding vehicle, following which the driver fled the spot. His mother was transported to the local civil hospital by onlookers, but declared dead by doctors.

Phase-1 police booked the unidentified accused under Sections 281 and 106 of BNS.
