Gor’s visit is the first ever by any US diplomat to the Himalayan region following the Galwan clash in eastern Ladakh between Indian and Chinese armies on June 15, 2020. In the face of unprecedented Chinese aggression, 20 Indian soldiers laid down their lives defending the frontiers and inflicted heavy casualties on the PLA.

“The US ambassador had initially intended to meet Ladakh LG, VK Saxena. Since the LG is in Delhi to meet the PM, the dates were not available with us,” said an official of the Ladakh Lok Bhawan. Gor’s visit is also the first by any top US diplomat to Ladakh after the region was carved out as a separate Union Territory in 2019.

The US ambassador called Jammu and Kashmir an important part of India on Wednesday, a statement that did not go down well with Islamabad, which summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires and lodged a strong demarche.
