Vet varsity announces names of progressive farmers for CM awards

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana has announced the names of four progressive livestock farmers to be awarded on March 24 at Pashu Palan Mela. Gurdev Singh, Balwinder Singh Mann, Khushwant Singh and Amandeep Singh are the four selected farmers.
Parkash Singh Brar, director of extension education, said GADVASU is making all out efforts for the development of livestock sector in the state by strengthening its extension programmes.
In order to motivate various categories of livestock farmers, the university organizes innovative competitions to assess the extent and impact of adoption of latest technologies in improving the productivity and profitability of different livestock farming systems. The university received many applications for the competition this year.
A committee of experts including deans and directors visited the farms of those who participated in the competition and evaluated their farming system.
In buffalo category, Gurdev Singh of Firozepur has been selected as the winner. He started dairy farming in 1994 and has 17 cattle. One of his buffaloes produces 23.5 litres of milk in a day.
In the goat farming category, Balwinder Singh Mann of Bathinda has been selected for the award. He started goat farming in 2017 and has 379 goats. The goats produce approximately 2.5-3 litres milk every day.
Khushwant Singh of Hoshiarpur has been selected as the winner in the fish farming category. He started fish farming in 1997 with 5 acres of land and now has expanded his farms to 28 acres.
In Piggery category, Amandeep Singh of Mansa has been selected for the award.
Brar said these awards include a plaque, shawl, citation and cash.
