Police have registered an FIR and apprehended a 17-year-old boy after three policemen were injured as a mob allegedly threw chilli powder in their eyes and attacked them with bricks and sticks in Mukundpur near north Delhi’s Bhalswa Dairy on Saturday afternoon. Police said the attack was allegedly over impounding a motorcycle at Janta Vihar in the area.

Deputy commissioner of police (outer-north) Shobhit D Saxena said that at 3pm on Saturday, two head constables, Dinesh and Rajesh, were on a beat patrol duty at Janta Vihar in Mukundpur. During vehicle checks, they asked a man on motorcycle to stop and show his documents. Since the person could not produce valid documents, the officers brought the vehicle to the police station under Section 66 of Delhi Police Act.

Around 3.30pm, the policemen returned to the neighbourhood, when a group of people, including the owner of the motorcycle and his family members arrived, police said. They began confronting the policemen over seizing the motorcycle. Police said they told the family that the action was taken as per the law.

“However, the group threw chilli powder in eyes of the policemen and began assaulting them with bricks and sticks. Another head constable, Tinu, who reached the spot to assist his colleagues was also attacked. All three personnel sustained injuries. Head constables Dinesh suffered a head injury. They were sent to a nearby hospital for medical attention and are currently stable,” DCP Saxena added.

A video clip, purportedly of the incident, surfaced on social media on Sunday, showing four policemen in a scuffle with three men on a street in a residential neighbourhood. In the video, another man is seen repeatedly hitting one policeman with a stick while he and other policemen are seen overpowering one of the three men. A teenager is also seen hitting another policeman with a stick while a woman is trying to snatch a stick from another policeman.

An FIR for obstructing public servants in discharge of public functions, assault or criminal force to deter public servants from discharge of their duties, voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter public servants from their duty, attempt to commit culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy and common intention was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 221, 132, 121, 110, 61, and 3 at Bhalswa Dairy police station, the DCP said.

While a 17-year-old boy involved in the attack was apprehended, other attackers fled.

“The main absconding accused, Sunila alias Pankaj, is a registered as a habitual offender at the police station. He was previously involved in five cases, including two cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Raids are being conducted to arrest the absconding suspects,” added Saxena.
