Female students, who reside at the Savitribai Phule Pune University’s (SPPU) girl’s hostel, staged a protest on Friday outside Nitin Karmalkar, vice-chancellor’s office, citing various issues with the university hostel.
The group of 100 female students from various departments handed over their list of demands to the vice-chancellor at 11.30 am.
“There is no first aid box and medicines available at the health care centre. All the sanitary napkin dispensers are damaged. The security guards and hostel staff are extremely rude. Other than this, we have also demanded for immediate change of the hostel rector and the current one is not helpful and does not adhere to student problems,” said Rachna Pardeshi, student representative of the girl’s hostel.
“We also demanded scrapping of the late pass system and maintaining curfew at 12pm. We also want a grocery and general store inside the hostel and for our mothers and sisters to be allowed to visit us. Other than this we want to be able to use irons, cookers and heaters inside our rooms,” she added.
“We have received a letter from the students regarding issues they face at the girl’s hostel. We will look into the same and try resolving them at the earliest,” said Karmalkar.
