The enforcement team of the HSVP demolished 25 shops and 20 rooms, which were constructed on land acquired by the HSVP there, said the officials, adding that a police team comprising several personnel accompanied the enforcement team officials to defuse the situation and ensure that no obstruction was caused during the drive.

Sandeep Lot, junior engineer (enforcement wing), said a legal dispute has been going on the land acquired by the HSVP in 2006, where the shops and rooms were constructed. “The court’s decision has come in favour of the HSVP, following which the demolition drive was carried out and the land was cleared,” Lot said.

The shop owners were informed about the demolition drive on Tuesday, and were asked to remove goods from all the respective shops, said Lot, adding, “The shop owners did not remove the goods despite the directions. On Thursday, we gave them more time to shift the goods out of the shops... and the demolition drive was carried out from 2pm till the evening,” he added.

The HSVP officials said that they cleared around two-acre encroached land following directions from higher authorities. Shops, rooms and labour quarters were constructed and given on rent, they added.

On Tuesday, the HSVP carried out a demolition drive on MG Road, in which around 1,700-sq-m land worth several crores was cleared. The officials said that the action was taken after a court decided a legal case concerning this land in favour of the authority. This land was also acquired by the HSVP officials in 2006.
