Inspired by TV shows, woman rescues daughter by luring kidnapper into ‘love’ trap
Inspired by television crime shows, an illiterate woman posed as an unsatisfied wife and lured the kidnapper of her three-year-old daughter into a police trap and recovered her child on Thursday – almost 50 days after she was abducted.

The drama began on December 30, 2016 when Anita Devi and Jeetu’s daughter Chanchal was kidnapped. The accused, Raju, had approached the family living in Jagdishpura locality and offered a job to Jeetu while posing as an employee of Torrent Power Limited.
The accused had kidnapped the girl not for ransom but because he had no daughter and wanted one, police said. He has three sons. His wife was not prepared to have a fourth child thus he thought of kidnapping the girl
“Raju had asked father of Chanchal to get copies of documents and took the girl to buy her chocolates but never returned. The family lodged a complaint with us gave the phone number that the accused had given to Chanchal’s father but it was switched off. Finally the accused was arrested on Thursday and sent to jail while girl was handed over to her family,” BK Sisodia, in-charge of Jagdishpura police station told Hindustan Times. He also admitted that Anita Devi too had called the kidnapper.
Anita Devi told HT that she had herself made efforts to get in touch with Raju after taking her husband and the police into confidence. She used a fake name, Babita, and gained Raju’s trust and asked him to meet her.
“The accused had given his number to my husband but he had switched it off. No ransom call was made but I continued to dial the number from my phone and after a week, the accused picked the phone and I began talking to him,” she said.
She told the accused on the phone that she was not happy with her husband and was starved of love. Raju promised to meet Anita on Valentine’s Day but did not turn up. He eventually reached a park at Sikandra in Agra on Thursday and was arrested by policemen in mufti.
“I had been watching TV serials including those about crime and thus planned to have a go,” Anita Devi said.
Anita Devi said Raju had cared for her daughter but kept her under vigil and insisted that she address him as her father.
Anita and her husband also have three sons.
