Kerala Nun rape: Jalandhar Bishop yet to be quizzed, cops question two others

A day after recording statements of four nuns, the six-member Kerala Police team on Sunday recorded statements of two people at Trinity College in Jalandhar to investigate into a nun’s complaint of sexual assault against Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal of Roman Catholic Diocese.

The team, led by Vaikom DSP K Subhash, arrived at the Trinity College, run by the church management, at 10.40am and spent about five hours there to record the statements of a nun and father Anthony. They both gave their statements in writing.

The police refused to disclose anything .

“We have recorded statements of two people. We will now visit a church in Majitha. We are yet to question the bishop,” said DSP Subhash. He refused to share any other details of the probe. Jalandhar DCP Gurmeet Singh said the Kerala Police are likely to question the Bishop on Monday.

Mulakkal, 54, was booked in Kottayam on June 29 for sexually abusing a 43-year-old nun 13 times, including in Jalandhar, between 2014 and 2016.

The four nuns questioned include mother superior Rejina and three nuns Amla, Mariya and Virgina on Saturday at the Missionaries of Jesus Congregation in Jalandhar, where the complainant was posted as mother general till 2013.

The nun is a member of the Missionaries of Jesus Congregation based in Punjab which runs two convents in Kerala. She was working at one of the convents at Kuravilanagad in Kottayam.
