The forest department began the Harishankari Week, a special plantation drive under which saplings of three species will be planted across the state, on Monday.
Under the Harishankari Week saplings of peepal, pakar and banyan saplings are planted close by representing deities. The drive was kicked off by forest minister Arun Kumar Saxena who along with senior forest officials planted saplings at the Gulzar Upvan in Mohanlalganj.
“Plantation will continue till August 15, the day when yet another mega plantation drive will be conducted,” said Ravi Kumar Singh, divisional forest officer, Lucknow.
The state has planted over 30 crore saplings this year and on August 15 another mega drive of planting 5 crore more saplings will be conducted. In five years, the state plans to plant 175 crore saplings.
On August 15, Amrut Van will also be established at 43,003 places in the state and 34.23 lakh saplings will be planted in these Amrut Van. Here, saplings of 75 local species of trees will be planted with priority to peepal, neem, mango and drumstick.
