CNG, piped gas to cost more in Mumbai

The revised rates were announced by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) on Sunday and will take effect from midnight of August 31

MUMBAI: Compressed natural gas (CNG), used to power vehicles, has risen by ₹2 per kg, taking the cost of the fuel to ₹88 per kg in and around Mumbai. Domestic piped natural gas (PNG), used as a cooking fuel, has also been revised upwards, by ₹1 per standard cubic metre (SCM).

The revised rates were announced by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) on Sunday and will take effect from midnight of August 31. MGL attributes the hike to an increase in input gas costs linked to international indices amid the ongoing West Asia crisis.

The company says due to the rising demand for CNG, it is meeting a major portion of its requirement through imported spot regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), which costs more. This has also raised MGL’s input costs.

The hike will impact the owners of lakhs of CNG-powered vehicles in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including autorickshaws, taxis and private vehicles, coming at a time when transport costs are already under pressure.
