Cop injured after scooter crashes into him; 2 minors detained

Mumbai: A policeman attached to the Worli police station sustained serious head injuries, on Monday, after a two-wheeler crashed into him during a Nakabandi in Worli. The scooter was driven by a minor and there were two pillion riders – another minor and a 21-year-old man.

Based on the injured cop’s statement, the police have booked and arrested the 21-year-old man, a resident of Worli’s Siddharth Nagar, said a police officer, adding, “His two friends – residents of Prem Nagar and Pathan Chawl areas of Worli – are detained and would be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.” (Image for representation)

The man – Shubham Kadam – was arrested and the other two minors – who did not have a driving licence – were detained.

The injured constable, Sagar Makwana, has been posted with the Worli police station since October 2021. On Monday, he was conducting a Nakabandi at Worli Hill Road along with two of his colleagues.

“Around 12.30 pm, Makwana spotted a two-wheeler with three persons riding on it. The police constable then signalled the rider to stop the scooter, but the two people sitting behind, were heard telling the rider to speed up and run over the cop,” states Makwana’s FIR.

The rider sped up and crashed into Makwana, who fell and sustained severe head injuries. He started bleeding profusely and was rushed to the nearby Poddar Hospital. “Makwana has sustained a deep cut on his head, but he is stable now,” a police officer said.

Based on the injured cop’s statement, the police have booked and arrested Kadam, a resident of Worli’s Siddharth Nagar, said the officer, adding, “His two friends – residents of Prem Nagar and Pathan Chawl areas of Worli – are detained and would be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.”

The trio are booked under sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and 3(1), 4 (1), 184, 119, 128, 129 and 177 of Motor Vehicles Act.
