A 65-year-old woman from Uran was found murdered on Tuesday in the bathroom of an adjoining house she had rented out to a daily wager. The police suspect that her paying guest, who is missing, might have killed her and fled with her jewellery.

Lilabai Krishnakant Thakur worked as aayah at the anganwadi of Bokadvira village. When she did not turn up for work on Tuesday, one anganwadi staffer came looking for her but found the door of her house open.
After not finding her there, the staffer went to the adjacent room that was locked. Upon peeping into the bathroom from the window, he saw Thakur lying on the floor with her hands and legs tied up. He raised the alarm and also informed the woman’s brother’s grandson who lives in the same village.
“Our forensic team has collected the fingerprints. Once we get the keys, we will open her cupboard to check if any valuables are missing,” an officer from Uran police station said.
According to the police, the tenant, identified as Amol Arjerao Shelar, 30, hails from Ahmednagar.
Her family claimed Thakur recently lent him ₹20,000, the officer said, adding Shelar would come home drunk and she had even warned him that if he continued to do this, he would have to look for another house. “The jewellery Thakur was wearing is also missing.”
Senior police inspector Sunil Patil said the motive for the murder could be known only after Shelar’s arrest.
Thakur had lost her husband at a young age and has no children. Since then, she has been staying at Bokadvira, her native village, the police said.
