Palghar drunk driving case: Speeding truck crushes two girls to death; man injured

Mumbai: In a gruesome incident of drinking and driving, two girls were crushed to death and a man was injured when a speeding truck hit them near Morchundi, in Jawhar, Palghar district on Saturday afternoon.

The incident took place around 3:15pm on Jawhar-Nashik Highway, where a speeding truck rammed into people sitting near a hotel on the side of the road, an official from Mokhada police station said.

According to police, Arohi Nakul Sonar (5) and Payal Bhalchandra Vargade (9), both residents of Morchundi of Mokhada village, were playing after school when the incident took place. After hitting the girls, the driver Sharad Nisarge (27) tried to reverse the truck and while doing so, he injured a man.

The truck later hit a tree and caught fire, the official said, adding that the driver was apprehended when he attempted to flee the scene.

The angry locals then thrashed Nisarge and handed him over to the Mokhada police while they rushed the kids to a government hospital where they were declared dead before admission while the injured is being treated.

“We will apply the stringent Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and other Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as the Motor Vehicle Act and have detained Nisarga and will produce him before the Jawhar court on Sunday,” said Sr PI Sanjay Brahmane of Mokhada police station.

The cops also informed, “The post-mortem reports of the two girls is awaited. We have sent accused Nisarge for medical test to ascertain the alcohol level which led to the mishap.”

The locals staged a rasta roko and did not allow any vehicles to pass towards Nasik or Jawhar due to the incident and traffic was diverted via Sherichapada to protest and express their anger over the ghastly mishap
