Mumbai: A 30-year-old location manager, working for a leading production house was injured after a neighbour fired an air-gun while he was meditating at a jogger’s park in Yari Road on Sunday morning. The victim, Narayan Singh Yadav, suffered an injury on the right side of his lower back.

According to Yadav, around 10.30am on Sunday, after completing his jogging routine, he went to the meditation podium inside Nakhwa Garden. “After a few minutes into the meditation, I felt a strong jolt in my lower back, followed by a loud sound and something piercing into my back. I thought I was shot,” he said.

Yadav, who stays at Yari Road, said as he touched his back, he saw blood on his t-shirt. “Members of a theatre group informed me that I was shot with an air gun and also told me that six months ago, one of their actors was also shot by a resident from a nearby bungalow, just 30 feet away from the podium,” said Yadav.

Upon enquiring, the 30-year-old learnt that the shot was fired by a man named Manoj Malkani, (54), who stays in bungalow number 14 in Air India Society in Versova.

Yadav said that the theatre artiste, who has shot a few months ago, approached the society authorities. They assured them that such incidents won’t be repeated but refused to admit that the shot was fired from their society.

“If the shrapnel had hit my backbone or any other part, I would have been paralysed. Such a shot could prove to be fatal if it hits a child,” he said, adding that after getting hit by the air gun shot, he first went to the doctor for treatment, and later in the day approached the Versova police and reported the incident.

Siraj Inamdar, a senior police inspector of Versova police station, said that they have registered a case against Malkani under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and since the injury was not serious, they have issued a notice to Malkani.

Malkani is a laundry owner, who was summoned by the police to record his statement. “Malkani said that the air gun was fired accidentally,” said Inamdar.
