Top cop introduces measures to protect senior citizens

Mumbai To make senior citizens feel more secure and taken care of, Sanjay Pandey, Mumbai police commissioner, has issued fresh directions to beat officers to maintain an attendance notebook with the elderly and sign after each visit.

The directions were issued by Pandey to each police station. He later broadcasted it on social media, so that the citizens too are aware about the steps taken by him to safeguard senior citizens and prevent crime.

One of the directions includes providing notebooks to senior citizens, which has to be signed twice in a week by the beat officers and then submit it for review to the police inspector to supervise and verify every fortnight whether the beat officers have been visiting them regularly.

The other directions include that the beat officer should maintain a list of senior citizens living in their area and submit a copy of the list to the senior police inspector of their respective police station.

Protection of senior citizens had been on Mumbai police priority list. A decade ago, the helpline 1090 called Elder Line to report emergencies and grievances and even ask for help with daily chores had been started by the police.
