MUMBAI: Two persons have been arrested on Thursday allegedly for the murder of a man, whose body was found hanging from a tree in Chembur this April, according to Tilak Nagar police. The two accused made it look like a case of suicidal death.

The accused identified as Gautam Borde Alias Taklya, 28, and Afzal Shaikh, 22, both residents of Chembur. The victim, however, is yet to be identified.

The incident occurred on April 19, when a person was found hanging from a tree near Holy Family School in Chembur. The man appeared to have died by suicide, and therefore the police registered an accidental death report (ADR) and started an investigation, said Hemraj Rajput, deputy commissioner of police.

During the instigation, police found an eyewitness who said he saw two persons assaulting the deceased. The post-mortem report was also pending.

The eyewitness statement of the victim’s death was found to be matching, which led police to check the CCTV footage from the area, and both the suspects were located and brought to the police station for investigation, said a police officer.

Initially, during the interrogation, both the accused lied, but when they were questioned separately, they confessed to the crime, added the official.

The accused revealed that the man was drunk and was abusing them. Angered by it, they beat him up. During the assault, the man fell on the ground and died. They then hung him from a tree to make it look like a case of death by suicide, said Rajput.
