PANVEL: A 45-year-old man overseeing centreing work at a construction site in Garade village, Panvel, was shot dead in broad daylight on Tuesday afternoon. The victim, identified as Babu Waghmare from Pargaon village, reportedly collapsed while working, moments after a gunshot was heard.

According to eyewitness accounts, fellow workers rushed to the scene upon hearing the gunfire and found Waghmare lying motionless. Senior inspector Nitin Thakare confirmed that an investigation was underway to determine the reason behind the firing. “There is a high probability that the accused is one of the workers employed at the site,” he stated.

While the police are still piecing together the details of the incident, multiple theories have emerged. One possibility is that Waghmare was struck by a stray bullet from a hunter in the forested area surrounding the village. “The site is located in a remote area encircled by hills and dense vegetation, and according to the locals, there are hunters around. We are probing whether this could be a case of misfire,” said an official involved in the investigation.

Another angle being considered is a dispute over delayed payments or an internal rivalry among workers. “Preliminary findings suggest that financial disagreements or personal conflicts may have led to the fatal shooting,” the official added.

Waghmare’s body has been sent for a post-mortem, and the authorities are attempting to contact his family. The police are investigating the incident from all possible angles.
