On August 3, the body of the woman, Ragini, was discovered by the police with two close-range gunshot wounds to her head and chest below the over-bridge on the river Hindon connecting Ghaziabad and Baghpat near Surana village in Muradnagar, said investigators.

On August 4, the deceased woman’s sister, Manju Shah, heard about the body’s recovery, approached the Ghaziabad police, and identified the body as her sister’s.

Shah filed a first information report (FIR) against Ragini’s employer, Bunty Singh, 29, his wife Rakhi, 26, and his brother-in-law Amit Jatav, 25.

According to the police, Ragini was married but was living apart from her husband and was staying with her sister, Shah. Ragini worked at Bunty Singh’s real estate firm in Noida and had entered into a romantic relationship with him over the past several months.

“Rakhi’s relationship with her husband Bunty deteriorated because of the latter’s affair with Ragini. On August 2, Rakhi and Bunty had another fight over the same issue, and Bunty severely beat Rakhi this time. After being beaten by her husband, Rakhi called her brother Amit Jatav and asked him to kill Ragini. Jatav enlisted the help of four of his friends and went to Ragini’s house, luring her in his car by claiming Rakhi was waiting in the car,” said Vivek Chandra Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (rural).

In the FIR, Shah said that Amit came to her house in Sector 22 in Noida on the night of August 2 and asked Ragini to accompany him to the car outside, where Rakhi Singh was waiting. Ragini then went with him from her sister’s house.

According to the police, Rakhi was not inside the car. When Ragini entered the vehicle, the five men immediately held her at gunpoint, said police officers associated with the case. Then they drove to Muradnagar, 40km from sector 22, Noida.

According to police, Jatav was a Muradnagar resident who was well-versed in the area.

“They took Ragini late at night to the over-bridge, where Amit and Ankit each fired a close-range shot at her. Then they threw her from the over-bridge, and she fell near the river. This resulted in additional injuries to her body,” said DCP Yadav.

The next day, police officers discovered her body beneath the river Hindon over-bridge.

“Bunty was unaware of the murder until that point because he was at home in Hapur with his wife Rakhi, who had planned it. Bunty learned of Ragini’s murder while speaking with one of her friends on August 3, but he did not approach the police and fled with Rakhi,” the DCP added.

Bunty, Rakhi and Jatav, along with two of Jatav’s two friends, Ankur Singh, 24, and Karan Lal, 23, were arrested on Sunday, while two others remain at large, said the police.

Bunty has been charged with Indian Penal Code section 201 (destruction of evidence) because he did not inform the police and fled with his suspect wife.

Rakhi was booked for criminal conspiracy leading to murder, while the five men were booked for murder, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy. They will also face an additional charge for the gunpoint abduction of Ragini in their car, according to the DCP.
