The victim, Rajbala Devi, was approached by a man wearing a helmet and a mask around 7am. He first asked her if he could put up a banner on the roadside.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, her son, said, “The man later came close to her and pulled her gold chain. He pushed her when she tried to resist, causing her to fall face-first on the ground.”

He said his mother had undergone a knee replacement surgery in March and doctors advised her to go for morning walks.

Singh said the suspect had parked his motorcycle some distance away and fled after the incident. The incident was captured on a nearby CCTV camera. “She suffered a fracture to her finger and shoulder and sustained injuries on her face and legs,” he said.

The footage showed the man wearing a helmet and pulling the chain before fleeing. The incident took place behind the Ghaziabad District Court and around 100 metres from the Ghaziabad Police Commissionerate headquarters.

Police said the suspect could not be identified as his face was covered.

“We have some input about the suspect based on electronic surveillance. An FIR has been registered against the unidentified suspect under BNS section 309(6) (voluntarily causing hurt during the commission of, or an attempt to commit, robbery) at Kavi Nagar police station. Teams have been formed to trace him,” said ACP (Kavi Nagar) Siddharth Gautam.
