BTech student who was hit by car on New Year’s eve out of danger, says hospital

Meanwhile, police said that they have not been able to get any headway in the case yet, adding that two teams have been sent out of station to investigate on a potential lead to catch the suspect

Accident victim Sweety Kumar is now out of danger and has been shifted to the high dependency unit (HDU) of the private hospital, officials said on Monday. Doctors said that she has been weaned off the ventilator and has started responding to treatment.

The three friends had stepped out to buy groceries before starting their New Year’s party at home on December 31. They were walking along the roadside when a speeding Santro car hit them. A couple in another car stopped to take the three victims to the hospital.

Sweety, a BTech student hailing from Bihar and two others had met with an accident around 9pm on New Year’s eve in Greater Noida’s Alpha 2 area while they were walking along the roadside. They were hit by a speeding car that fled from the spot. While two of her friends suffered minor injuries, she suffered a head injury apart from multiple fractures all over her body.

“We had performed an emergency craniotomy on the same day as she remained critical. However, we were able to wean her off the ventilator on Friday, after which she remained in the ICU till Sunday. She is now recuperating in the HDU. She is a fighter and has also started responding. We are now hopeful that she will survive,” said Dr Dinesh Sharma, director, Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida.

Dr Sharma added that other required surgeries, including the one to fix five fractures in her leg can be done only after she is completely out of danger.

“We know that it was a Santro car, but don’t have the vehicle’s registration number yet. We are checking CCTV footage around the area and hope to solve the case at the earliest,” said Abhishek Verma, deputy commissioner of police (Greater Noida).
