Ghaziabad: Two days after a Meerut-based businessman in his 20s was allegedly robbed of 25 lakh at gunpoint on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway in Ghaziabad, three people were detained on Sunday in Ghaziabad, said officials.

“We have detained three people and seized two cars, including the SUV used in the crime,” said Priyashri Pal, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Ghaziabad.

“The suspects and a few other people related to the case are being interrogated, and efforts are underway to nab the people who robbed the businessman,” the ACP added.

According to police, the suspects arrived in an SUV on Friday, and robbed the man while blaming him of “abducting a woman known to them”. The victim, a resident of Meerut’s Lohiya Nagar, is involved in his father’s garbage processing work in the city. He was travelling along with his two relatives.

Police said it is suspected that the suspects in the SUV were following the victims from Meerut to rob them. As the victims used to visit Delhi frequently with huge amounts of cash, police believe it is a handiwork of someone known to them.

On Friday, around 8pm, when the victim, along with his two relatives, was going to drop 25 lakh in cash at one of their partners’ places in Delhi’s Jaffrabad, an SUV (Mahindra Scorpio) overtook their SUV (Mahindra Thar) on the DME under the jurisdiction of Wave City police station, Ghaziabad.

The suspects claimed that their sister was missing and that they suspected she was being abducted by them, police said.

“On the pretext of checking their vehicle, the suspects put them at gunpoint and assaulted them. They took away 25 lakh from their possession and fled the spot,” said an investigator, requesting anonymity.

“Subsequently, the victim called the police on 112 and reported the robbery,” the officer added.

On Saturday, a case of robbery under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at the Wave City police station and police formed five teams in the case.
