A delegation of UP Congress Committee on Sunday met youths lodged in Varanasi district jail after being arrested in connection with violent protests against Agnipath scheme in Varanasi over a week ago.

In Varanasi, 27 youths were arrested for allegedly protesting against the Agnipath scheme.

Congress leader Ajai Rai said that the Agnipath scheme was not in the interest of the youths. “The Congress party will fight democratically for the youths preparing for joining the Army. The youths wake up at 4am in the morning and run for several kilometres daily as part their preparations to join the Army. The Congress will fight for the rights of all those youths,” he said.

There should be recruitment in the Army as per previous rule, they demanded.

The delegation comprised former MLA Ajay Rai, former MP Rajesh Mishra, state vice president Vishwavijay Singh, Varanasi city unit Congress president Raghavendra Choubey, district president Rajeshwar Patel, state vice president Maqsood Khan, state secretary Kamlesh Ojha, state secretary Imran Khan, state general secretary Devendra Singh, state general secretary Sarita Patel, district president Chandauli Dharmendra Tiwari, city president Chandauli Ramji Gupta and Manish Choubey.
