PWD sanctions ₹291 cr for Yamuna Vihar-Bhajanpura flyover
PWD allocates ₹291.10 crore for a 1.4-km flyover on the Maujpur-Majlis Park corridor, part of Delhi's first double-decker viaduct project.
New Delhi:The Public Works Department (PWD) has sanctioned ₹291.10 crore for construction of a 1.4-km flyover between Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura on the Maujpur-Majlis Park corridor, officials said on Thursday.
The sanction, issued on August 6, allows payment to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the project along Mangal Pandey Marg.
A four-lane flyover will form the lower deck of Delhi’s first double-decker viaduct, with a metro line running on the upper deck, officials added.
The PWD issued the sanction after the Expenditure Finance Committee, chaired by chief minister Rekha Gupta, approved the expenditure in a meeting last month.
The flyover will cover the Karawal Nagar, Ghoda and Brijpuri junctions. The project includes construction of the elevated corridor, road works, signage, electrical works and drainage. It is expected to be completed by the end of the year, added PWD officials.
The project is part of the 12.32-km Maujpur-Majlis Park corridor under Phase IV, which extends the Pink Line and aims to improve connectivity in northeast Delhi. The metro section above the proposed flyover has been operational since March.
On March 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two new Metro corridors in Delhi, including the 12.3-km Majlis Park-Maujpur-Babarpur section, completing what was described as the first ring on any Metro network in the country.
However, construction of the flyover announced in late 2019, remained stalled for nearly two years before work resumed after the DMRC received permission from the Delhi forest department in December last year to fell trees along the alignment.
The PWD sanction requires the project to be completed within the approved cost and stipulated period. It provides a five-year defect liability period and mandates compliance with financial and procurement rules.
It also requires photographic documentation before and after execution, electronic payments to contractors and uploading of project details and progress reports on the department’s website and designated online portal.
The Maujpur-Majlis Park corridor is the first of three double-decker viaducts planned under Phase IV of the Delhi Metro.
The longest, measuring 2.4-km, is planned between Sangam Vihar and Ambedkar Nagar stations on the Aerocity-Tughlaqabad corridor. Another, around 2.2-km long is proposed between Azadpur and the Rani Jhansi Road intersection on the RK Ashram Marg-Janakpuri West corridor.
