On contrary to the expectation, the mother of Unnao rape survivor, Asha Singh, who was fielded as Congress candidate, could get only 760 votes till the 15th round of counting on Thursday. Final results were awaited.
Congress had fielded Singh in place of the victim as she was underage, as part of the Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon campaign.
Meanwhile, the Congress candidate was not available for comment, but the BJP leaders said that the government acted tough against its own MLA Kuldip Singh Sengar, which was rewarded by the people.
Sengar was convicted for the rape charge following which he was stripped of his position as a legislator. His brother Atul Sengar was also in jail for murdering the father of the survivor after framing him in a false case.
Sengar’s family had opposed the candidature of Singh alleging that the charges levelled against Sengar were fabricated. Sengar’s daughter Aishwarya Singh had even released a video hitting out at Priyanka Gandhi and had appealed to the masses to choose between the fabrication and reality.
During her campaign, the survivor and her mother had highlighted the atrocities and the suffering at hands of government machinery before the people.
