New rule for registration renewal of older vehicles
Earlier, older vehicles were offered re-registration facility after vehicle’s inspection and verification of documents by the MVI only. The DTO was the final authority to accept or deny re-registration
Renewal of registration of private vehicles more than 15 years old would now need the approval of the transport department, said a senior official on Sunday.
According to the new norms, the district transport officer (DTO) and the motor vehicle inspector (MVI) will carry out joint inspection of the vehicle concerned, verify the documents in front of the owner and send the application to the department for final approval.
Earlier, older vehicles were offered re-registration facility after vehicle’s inspection and verification of documents by the MVI only. The DTO was the final authority to accept or deny re-registration.
A senior officer of Patna DTO said vehicle owners were required to come to the newly office near Phulwari Sharif Camp Jail at 11am for the joint inquiry by DTO and MVI. “The entire process will be videographed. The officials would then send the application for renewal of registration to the department for the final nod,” he added.
“However, vehicles registered later and having smart cards for registration instead of registration certificate (RC) book need not undergo this as the MVI can do it by self,” clarified the officer, adding there were around 3 lakh vehicles which still operated on the RC book.
After three days (August 3-5) of initial trail, the new system will now come into effect from Monday. The officer said only private and non-commercial vehicles were qualified for renewal of registration.
