In a special drive conducted between March 1 and 23, 2023, the Pune RTO has fined Punekars for traffic violations ranging from using mobile phones and not wearing helmets while driving to speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road to using tinted/black glass and sun film in vehicles. According to the information shared by the Pune RTO, there has been an increase in traffic violations by citizens in the last few days, a majority of which involve not wearing helmets while driving and speeding beyond permissible limits. A large number of citizens have been caught for not possessing a driving license and not installing the mandatory high-security registration plate (HSRP) on their vehicle/s.

Sanjeev Bhor, deputy regional transport officer, Pune RTO, said, “We have formed a special squad of RTO inspectors to take action against traffic violators in the city wherein a large number of Punekars have been fined as per the Motor Vehicles Act. Our appeal to citizens is to strictly follow traffic rules and regulations for their own safety.”

According to the Pune RTO, on many main roads such as Ferguson College Road, Shivaji Road and M G Road which are one-ways, Punekars have been found driving on the wrong side and have been consequently penalised by the traffic police/RTO inspectors. Similarly, many citizens have been caught speeding or not wearing helmets while driving/riding their vehicles; something directly connected to their own safety.

Anuj Bhosale, a traffic safety activist, said, “We daily come across news about bike riders losing their lives in accidents due to speeding or not wearing helmets. It is important and also mandatory for everyone to at least wear a helmet for their family if not for themselves.”
