The accused constable identified as Ganesh Ashok Jagtap ( 54), was posted with the Special Branch (SB), an important intelligence-gathering wing of the city police.

He was produced before a city court which remanded him to a week’s custody, on Friday.

Only constables having unblemished career records can apply for the President’s Police Medal.

Jagtap was arrested while the other two accused identified as junior clerk Nitesh Arvind Aynoor and senior clerk Ravindra Dhondiba Bandal who are absconding have been charged for the crime which took place in the official service book manipulation of official records at Wanowrie police station in 2019.

Senior clerk Santosh Prataprao Bhosale lodged the first information report (FIR) stating that the crime took place between July 26, 2017, and Jan 29, 2020, at DCP (Zone V) office.

The FIR states, “Jagtap was posted at Wanowrie police station between 2017-2020. His increments were withheld as a penalty for dereliction of duty. He was awarded punishment on February 13, 2018. The adverse remarks on his service book was a major hurdle before him to apply for the President’s Medal. He along with the two accused hatched a conspiracy and made duplicate entries in the service book, forged signatures and misused government stamps. The trio destroyed the criminal record of the constable regarding his adverse service record for illegitimate gains.”

Deepak Lagad, incharge of Wanworie police station, said, “We have arrested the accused constable for forging the documents. The other accused are absconding.”

All the four accused have been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) 409, 420, 467, 468,475, 476, 474, 472, 471, 466, 167 and 120 (B).
